Ho Chi Minh

Ho Chi Minh commonly known as Saigon is the largest city in Vietnam and the former capital of Republic of Vietnam.  Saigon was officially renamed as Ho Chi Minh in 1975 but the old name still used by both Vietnemese and foreigners especially when referring to the most central part of the city to which most tourist flocks.

1) Phạm Ngũ Lão Street

Located in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, Vietnam. It was named after Pham Ngu Lao, the national hero. The intersection of Pham Ngu Lao and De Tham streets are referred to as the backpacker district of Saigon. This area is frequented by Ho Chi Minh city locals and tourist who flock to the area markets (both open air and indoors) to buy cheap clothes (some of which are counterfeit), DVDs, souvenirs, and war memorabilia. The many bars and cafes in this district are conveniently located near Saigon's city centre. In the Vietnamese language, this area is called "khu Tay ba lo" (Backpacker's area).

The Pham Ngu Lao area is known for its affordable guest houses and mini-hotels as well as the availability of tourist agencies which primarily cater to budget tourists, similar to Khao San Road in Bangkok, Thailand.

2) Củ Chi tunnels

an immense network of connecting underground tunnels located in the Củ Chi district of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam, and are part of a much larger network of tunnels that underlie much of the country. The Củ Chi tunnels were the location of several military campaigns during the Vietnam War, and were the Viet Cong's base of operations for the Tết Offensive in 1968.

The tunnels were used by Viet Cong soldiers as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerous North Vietnamese fighters. The tunnel systems were of great importance to the Viet Cong in their resistance to American forces, and helped to counter the growing American military effort.

3) Municipal Theatre, Ho Chi Minh City

Built in 1897 by French architect Eugène Ferret as the Opėra de Saigon, the 800 seat building was used as the home of the Lower House assembly of South Vietnam after 1956. It was not until 1975 that it was again used as a theatre, and restored in 1995.

4)Suối Tiên Amusement Park

An artificial seawater pool is located in the park for sea-bathers. There is also a dinosaur garden.

Shinjuku, Japan: Nothing Could Go Wrong

Shinjuku.
When we talk about Shinjuku, what is the first thing ring into your mind? Entertainment? Business? Shopping?
Whatever it is, Shinjuku is actually a pretty nice place to visit.

Shinjuku Station is the world's busiest railway station as it handles more than two million passengers every day.  (Phew) Because of the crowd, sometime the attendant had to push them in before the door close and trust me, if the train could burst, it will.

Doll Island, Creepy and Haunted.

Are you one of those Dark Tourism Lover?

Then, Come over to Doll Island. You'll feel the goosebumps.

The Island founded by the only inhabitant, Don Julian Santana, where he found a body of drowned child in a canal 50 years ago. He was said haunted by the child ghost and every time he found a floating doll on the canal he would bring it back and hung in the tree. In hoped to both appease her tortured soul and protect the island from further evil.

However, as time passes, Don Juan Santana becoming extreme in his habit and he continued to fish dolls and doll parts out of the canal whenever he saw them, hanging each one carefully on the island. There weren't enough canal dolls to satisfy Santana’s tortured spirit, so he began scavenging more from trash heaps on his rare trips away from home. Later in life, he began trading his home-grown fruits and vegetables for dolls.

Many stories have been associated with the island over the years. A popular tale was that Don Julian had gone mad and believed the dolls to be real children who he pulled from the canal and tried to revive. But the truth, as told by his family members who now run the island as a tourist attraction, is that Don Julian simply believed the island was haunted by the spirit of the little girl. For reasons only known to Don Julian himself, he believed that he could make the dead girl happy and keep evil at bay by hanging discarded dolls in all of the island’s trees.

The story took a particularly sinister turn in 2001 when Don Julian drowned in the canal just like the little girl. Many people said that the dolls, inhabited by tortured spirits, conspired to murder the old man. Others believe that Santana’s death was an accident and that since his passing, the dolls have taken over his role as the island’s caretaker.

Spiders and insects have taken up residence in the hollow parts of most of the dolls. Although Don Julian’s sentiment was innocent and admirable, the doll graveyard he created is undeniably creepy. Soulless eyes follow visitors as they move around the small island (which is actually a chinampa, or artificial floating garden), and many swear that they can hear the dolls whispering to them. This labor of love (or fear, as it were) has resulted in an accidental sensation amongst those who admire the bizarre and twisted side of tourism.

Are you brave enough to experience this darkness? Go ahead and try yourself.
